It’s fine to dream big, but not everyone has the drive or the luck to end up being JK Rowling. Not having huge financial success or achieving fame does NOT make you a failure—especially in today’s publishing environment. After years of trying to break into Hollywood, one writer I know adopted the motto “We are all famous to a few people” and shot six-minute episodes of a web series that was seen by 700 people. That may not sound like much, but it was way more success than he’d achieved wooing the Big Studios for 20 years. Likewise, novelists have many options, including traditional New York publishers, national and local small presses and self-publishing. It’s possible to strike gold with any of these, but you can also adjust your goals and achieve peace of mind.
